Release of OSXFUSE 2.3.0 Posted on 25 Jul 2011

  1. The free Fender Tone application allows you to access over 10,000 presets with intuitive one-touch control over your contemporary Fender amplifier. Download, share, modify, backup and restore to expand your sound – all within Tone. Available for both iOS & Android mobile and tablet devices, as well as Mac and Windows desktop computers.
  2. Download and install the SSHFS module (available from the FUSE for OS X page). As with managing Ext2 and Ext3 drives, create a folder on your Mac to use as a mount point.

To install Fender FUSE: 1 Double-click on the Fender FUSE Setup.exe file (for PC) or the FUSE Installer.dmg (for Mac), then follow the instructions on screen. 2 If any permission windows pop up during the Fender FUSE installation process, always allow installation by clicking on 'OK' or 'NEXT.' I'm quite baffled that Fender is still selling the Mustang 1 V2 despite the fact that Fuse is no longer available, because this amp requires Fuse to access 9 of the amp models of the 17 this amp can use, because only 8 of them are loaded into the amp from the factory.

This is the first public release of OSXFUSE, a successor to MacFUSE. OSXFUSE 2.3.0 is a beta release and may contain bugs.

Features

  • OSXFUSE is based on Tuxera's MacFUSE 2.1.9 release, that has proven to be reasonably stable. MacFUSE 2.1.9 can be obtained from Tuxera.
  • Features a MacFUSE compatibility layer to support existing MacFUSE file systems without the need to recompile them. OSXFUSE can be a drop-in replacement for MacFUSE.
  • OSXFUSE supports Mac OS X 10.6 and 10.7 including full support for 64 bit kernels. Support for Mac OS X 10.5 (Intel/PowerPC) will be added in a future release.
  • OSXFUSE 2.3 follows a simple rule: If it is not broken, do not fix it. Besides rebranding as OSXFUSE and addition of the MacFUSE compatibility layer there have been few code changes.

Installing OSXFUSE

The OSXFUSE installer offers the following choices/packages:

  • The package 'OSXFUSE Core' includes the kernel extension, the user space C library libosxfuse and the Objective-C framework OSXFUSE.framework.
  • The package 'OSXFUSE Preference Pane' installs the OSXFUSE Preference Pane, which is used to update OSXFUSE or uninstall it.
  • The 'MacFUSE Compatibility Layer' provides support for file systems build for MacFUSE. If the MacFUSE compatibility layer is selected MacFUSE will be uninstalled automatically. MacFUSE file systems will not be removed.

Uninstalling OSXFUSE

OSXFUSE can be uninstalled by pressing the 'Remove OSXFUSE' button in the OSXFUSE Preference Pane. The Preference Pane itself will not be uninstalled by this step and has to be removed manually by secondary-clicking on 'FUSE for OS X' in System Preferences and selecting 'Remove FUSE for OS X Preference Pane'.

Fender Mustang 1 vs. 2. It’s a question many guitar players may ask themselves when they’re looking for a new modeling amp. Digital modeling amps dominate the market for guitar amps under $200. Some of the best sellers in this price range are the Fender Mustang series of amps, specifically the Fender Mustang 1 and 2.

Both have the exceptional cleans that Fender amps are renowned for, and both are loaded with a ton of features, effects and amplifier models to play with.

In fact, the Mustang 1 and Mustang 2 are really very similar. Here’s a comparison between the two models to help decide which one fits you best.

Fender Mustang 1 vs Mustang 2 comparison

Fender Mustang 1 vs 2: physical dimension/construction.

The Fender Mustang 1 fits the standard practice amp mold with 20w and 1-8” speaker. It’s measures at 7.6″ x 15.5″ x 14.5″ and weighs 17 lbs. It’s big enough for decent volume, yet small enough to be portable.

The Mustang 2 is the big brother by comparison. It features 40w and 1-12” speaker, measures 8.7″ x 18.25″ x 17.25″ and weighs 24 lbs. The Mustang 2 is still pretty easy to get from point A to point B, but has a bit more rounded sound and larger headroom.

Both the Mustang 1 and 2 sport the Fender Carbon Tweed Textured Vinyl with Silver Grille Cloth cover.

Fender Mustang 1 vs 2: price

Mustang 1 MSRP: $159

As I write this, Guitar Center has the Fender Mustang I 20W 1X8 Guitar Combo Amp Black for $95, and Amazon is selling them for $109 (with extended warranty).

Mustang 2 MSRP: $269.99

Note: While the Mustang 2 has an MSRP over $200, it is easy to find for under (very close to) $200.
At the time of this review, Guitar Center was selling a Fender Mustang II 40W 1X12 Guitar Combo Amp Black for $199 and Amazon carried it for $199 also.

Who’s better, who’s best?

Which amp is best or better is a matter of personal taste and use, but here are some things to consider when choosing between the two.

Fuse For Mac

The Mustang II is bigger.

Since the Fender Mustang II is a bit larger than the Mustang I, it would be a bit bulkier to transport. It’s also a bit louder than the Mustang 1. Because of this, the Mustang 2 may not make as good a choice for solo practice amp, especially if you play in a small room or apartment.

Volume for home practice and live gigs.

With minimal tweaking and the use of the FUSE software, both these amps can kick some serious ass. Volume is not a problem unless you’re looking to do some serious gigs. If that’s the case, then you may want to look at the Fender Mustang III or IV. The Mustang II is loud enough for small gigs, and you might be able to get away with mic’ing up the Mustang I.
The Mustang 2 has a larger speaker and more power, which gives it a rounder, more balanced sound but it may be overkill in small settings.

Solo practice or band practice?

If you’re going to be playing in a band and are looking for a good practice amp that won’t break your back or your budget in the process, the Fender Mustang 2 is a solid choice. However, if you’re looking for a versatile and affordable amp for solo practice, the Mustang 1 is a most excellent choice.
